God’s work in you is complete and God cares about every aspect of your life! What you’re experiencing now is described by a man named Paul in the Bible. Paul is a great example of someone who lived a misdirected and empty life and was also made new by encountering Jesus. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 (a letter Paul wrote to the church in the ancient city of Corinth), Paul describes the process of becoming a follower of Jesus: “...if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!” (CSB). God does not just redress you. You are new and the old has gone! Be encouraged that God has changed your heart and will continue to be present in your life, helping you grow into the amazing purpose He has for your life. A moment of a decision leads to a lifetime of adjustments as you mature in Christ. Accepting Jesus does not mean that your life is perfect and free of struggles. Instead, God’s power lifts us up and sustains us in very difficult circumstances. Our hope is far more secure than anything this world has to offer. 1 Peter 1:13 states: “Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.” This reminds us that our minds are always fully engaged in matters of faith and that God is at work renewing our minds from the deceitful narratives of this world. Romans 12:2 is a helpful reminder to us that God is in the business of renewing our minds and that we are called—according to Paul—to think differently! “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things” (Philippians 4:8). Our minds are a battlefield. You’ve decided to follow Jesus and align your life around His Word, and the enemy desires to wage warfare by sowing seeds of doubt. Before the Birth of Jesus In the Old Testament, before Jesus walked the earth, God’s presence and power were experienced through a place (the Tabernacle then the Temple) and an object (the Ark of the Covenant). Throughout history, it was important for God’s people to know that God dwelt among them and that His presence and power defined every aspect of their lives. Only the High Priest could enter God’s dwelling place—the Holy of Holies—to offer sacrifices. In the Time of Jesus John 1:14 says of Jesus, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” Jesus is Immanuel, meaning ‘God is with us.’ The word for ‘dwelling’ in the Greek original language can easily be translated as ‘tabernacle among us.’ What a powerful image this is for our lives today. Much like God was present with His people as they wandered through the desert wasteland hoping to enter into the promised land, Christ was with us in human form. Today Today, God’s Spirit dwells within us, amidst the brokenness, difficulty, and crisis as we eagerly wait for what is to come in Heaven. Hear the words of Paul on this from 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? Therefore honor God with your bodies.” God dwelt with Israel in the Tabernacle (during the wilderness wanderings) and in the Temple as His people worshiped Him daily and offered sacrifices to God. No two churches are alike. We can be bold also because “[t]his same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. Consider memorizing some scripture verses that God has laid on your heart so that you are able to share these readily. Introduce them to God’s story— consider buying a Bible to give to someone with a personal encouragement from you in the front. You could also highlight a few verses of importance to you and use sticky notes to gently and easily lead them in their own journey. Think conversation not presentation— you don’t have to have all the answers to their questions or prepare an elaborate presentation to share with them. Spend time listening to those around you asking God for an opportunity to hear something that can be used as a springboard.
